"The Hospital” is originally a novel and the author is 候文詠. It was shot into the TV drama in 2004 by a famous director of Taiwan. 候文詠was a doctor in the National Taiwan University Hospital and quit the job after deciding to write this novel “The Hospital”.
It mainly talks about the conflicts and weakness of human nature. Doctors were fighting for their higher position in the hospital and forgot the mission of being a doctor. It probes into the complicated personal relations. In addition to medical ethic, it also talks about love and family ties.
Episode 1
The story starts with the president’s daughter affected acute leukemia and need to do an operation. Su Yi-hua was originally responsible for doing this operation; however, Tang Guo-tai felt being threatened that his position or fame may lose this time. Therefore, he secretly changed Su and had his vice administer Chiou Ching-cheng to perform this operation.
Episode 2
Su Yi-hua found out that he was not on the list to do the operation even the time of the operation was advanced, he was very astonished. However, he thought that if Liu Shing-ping will become better, it did not matter who performed this operation. At the same moment, the directors of surgical and medical department were fighting. It’s because that Tang said some aggressive word to Shiu Da-ming and he was not happy that Tang Guo-tai secretly changed the person in charge of the operation. And this scene was shot by the reporter. Few days after the operation, Su Yi-hua visited Liu Shing-ping and found out that she had a fever.
Episode 3
The hospital decided to have Liu Shing-ping to do the chemotherapy. During the meeting, Chiou Ching-cheng denied the possibility of Liu Shing-ping’s infection after the operation. After the conference, Shiu Da-ming implied Su Yi-hua that if Liu Shing-ping will be ok, then everyone will be ok, too. But, if there’s any problem on Liu, then Tang will be definitely doomed. Isn’t it a good news and advantage for us? Su Yi-hua was really terrified of his talk.
Ending
At the end, most of them do not have a good ending, including Su.
Tang Guo-tai got a stroke at last and still dreamed about being the administrator of the hospital.
Chiou Ching-cheng’s daughter had a car accident and the most pathetic point was that he might have to perform the operation on his daughter. At last, his daughter died.
Su Yi-hua got married with the daughter of Shiu Da-ming and became the director of the medical department. However, his personality seemed to be changed. He was not happy and became very fiery. At last, he was also the one who forgot the mission of being a doctor.

The medical ethic problem in The Hospital
The main problem in “The Hospital” is about how those doctors fight for power. First of all, the director of surgical department and the director of internal department are competing for the position of chairperson of the hospital. They use every possible ways to stop each other for getting the position. Doctors are supposed to save lives, however, doctors are longing for power. They seem to forget what they have promised before becoming a real doctor, that saving lives is the mission of doctors. One of the scenes is that the daughter of the president is sick, she needs an emergency surgery. The two directors are busy creep the president in order to get the position. They try to hide the truth of patient’s condition.
One of the patients died in a surgery and the family of this patient is angry and looks for justice. However, the hospital wants to use money to ignore the fact. “Money” and “Power” cause those doctors fall in this morality battle. “Red Envelope Culture” was a common situation in hospital. For those patients who need special cares, they also need to have a lot of money in order to get the best attention and treatment. Moreover, special people will get special treatment, for example, people like president or city mayors, they will have better care. They can live in VIP room while in the hospital, they will have guards outside their rooms 24 hours a day, they can use the best equipment, etc. On the other hand, people who don’t have money will have nothing. Sometimes when there is no empty sick room, they will have to stay in the aisle of emergency room. Some doctors or nurses will treat you in a very bad attitude when you are nobody. In this drama, it points out that some of the doctors are actually put profit above conscious which is a terrible problem in medical area.

Medical Errors
Medical errors happen everywhere. In America, experts estimate that there are about 100 thousand people died of medical errors every year. In Taiwan, according to the THRF, Taiwan Health Reform Foundation, the percentage of medical errors is 4%, which means there are 4 people died among every 100 people in average. The rate is not high. Although near a thousand people died of medical errors every year, there are more than hundreds of thousands of people are cured on the other hand. Therefore, it is acceptable. After all, people all make mistakes. Now, I’m going to introduce some famous medical errors occurred in Taiwan in the recent years.
1. Bai-Chen Hospital—Wrong Injection
Time:2002/11/30
A nurse had injected the wrong medicament to the newborns, and caused seven infants in danger. One of them, unfortunately, was dead. She was supposed to give the newborns vaccine injection. However, she injected gallmine, which is used to relax muscles, to them and cause this tragedy.
2. Chong-Ai Hospital—Wrong Medicine
Time:2002/12/10
The hospital had given the wrong medicine to the 120 patients, and caused 15 children to be hospitalized. One of them almost died in this accident. And according to the research, people who mistaken this medicine will probably have 17% to have intelligence collapse. That’s awful.
3. Human-ball Event
Time:2005/1/14
A sick child was sent to the emergency center in Ren-Ai hospital in Taipei. However, the hospital claimed that there is no room for this sick child and asked her to transfer to another hospital. Meanwhile, the little child’s life was disappearing when transferring to another hospital. Having missed the critical time to save the child’s life, she was gone on the way to another hospital.

According to the THRF, there are 86% of doctors didn’t explain their operations clearly to the patients or the patient’s relatives. Moreover, about 70 % of letter of authorization of operations are not complete filled. They found out some of the blanks such as reason of having the operation, and doctor’s announcement are blank. Especially the reason of having the operation, Only 1/5 of letter are filled. This may cause the understanding problems such as it was shown in the film. The husband didn’t know anything about her wife. All he knew was she was having an operation of her womb, but he didn’t anything about the detail of the operation. In Taiwan, this kind of situation happens a lot.

Solutions
Although there is no actual cure to solve the problem of the intrigue of power gaining among doctors, there are still two ways to solve this problem. The first one is enhancing the moral educations to students who will become doctors in the future. To teach them that saving people’s life is the most important duty during a doctor’s life. Other temptations which are mentioned in the drama must be forbidden. The education might not totally be soaked in doctors’ mind; still, it is not only the best solution but the essential attitude that doctor must cope with. The second one is using the authority from the Medical Association. There are two basic doctor leagues in Taiwan; one is The North Medical Associations which is mentioned in the drama; the other one is the South Medical Associations. They are the associations that show the justice of doctor’s attitude. Therefore, by asking them to warn and punish those doctors who are drunk with power, doctors will not dare to think about anything but save people.
The agreement between the representative of the hospital and patient’s family are the crucial element to work out the medical error. Doctor might make mistakes during a surgeon. On the other hand, the rage t of the patient’s family toward the hospital can be understood because they lose a member in their family. The situation will be tough when two sides all have their firm states. To solve this problem, the negotiation between hospital and the family of the patients must be done as well as possible. Besides, doctors have to give the contracts of agreement of executing the surgeon to the family of the patients to notice them the possibilities of the medical error and ask them to sign up the contracts if they accept all the possibilities which are mentioned in contracts. When two sides attach the same agreements, many medical errors can be solving much easier.
